January 30th, 1882 (Hyde Park, NY) - April 12, 1945 (Warm Springs, GA)
Political Party: Democratic
Terms: March 4, 1933 - April 12, 1945 (a total of three full terms and a partial fourth term)
Vice Presidents: John Nance Garner (1933-1941), Henry A. Wallace (1941-1945), Harry S. Truman (1945)
Thematic Context: From the start of the presidency there have been severe problems that needed to be changed. These problems were result of the Great Depression and have been changing America ever since it started. In order to change America for the better, FDR made critical decisions involving the economy. Roosevelt's New Deal program was the most crucial step towards fixing the situation. The New Deal included Roosevelt's 3Rs: Relief, Recovery, Reform. Relief was for the economically poor and unstable, Recovery was designed for the Nation's economy to progress it, and Reform was to rebuild and amend the financial system. America had to immediately recover from the downfall in finance and stock and with the New Deal, it was possible. America went from crashing stock markets and millions of unemployed people, to the brink of recovery.
Thesis: Franklin Delano Roosevelt was one of the better presidents because he did what it took to help the nation and progress it forward from it's already difficult time. As he entered his first term in office he had a great deal of pressure on his shoulders because of the Great Depression, and wasted no time trying to get the nation out of the hole they were in. Right away, he established his New Deal and 3Rs program, along with many acts that would help out. The New Deal was a major influence on America's economy and his 3Rs were apart of it. To enforce and operate his program he included certain acts that would have an affect. The Glass-Steagall Act and Social Security Act were big factors of the New Deal program and helped out the economy. Because of his impact and concern for the Nation, Roosevelt earns an A as president of America.
Goals: FDR begins his time in office with goals for strengthening the economy. He wanted to relieve the poor, recover the economy, and reform the financing system. His first goal was to decrease the unemployment size right away to regulate production and income in order to spark the economy and help out the families. Roosevelt worked for achieving his goal and was successful thanks to many acts and agencies that helped out. One agency, his favorite and the most popular of all New Deal agencies, that had an impact was the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). It saved 250,000 young men by getting them jobs working on local projects. To help the nation recover, FDR, with some help, created the largest government-owned industrial enterprise in American history – the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA), which built dams and power stations, controlled floods, and modernized agriculture and home conditions in the Tennessee Valley. For his last R, Reform, the National Industrial Recovery Act helped with this by giving him authority to regulate industries but prevent monopolies which played a big role in his goal. Franklin was successful with his goals and they had a great full impact on the nation.
Relationship/Congress: During his presidency he had a very healthy relationship with congress because his party, Democrats, were the majority in both the House and Senate. The strong support that he needed at was there, and it was obvious as he was able to do what he needed to help the nation, like the New Deal.
Positive Impact: Roosevelt's most positive impact on the nation would be his New Deal with the acts that involved like the Glass-Steagall Act and the Social Security Act. The Steagall act helped reopen and regulate all banks. Important, this act helped the economy get back on its feet by having control over the money and currency again. The Social Security Act was huge by helping out those who were unemployed, of old age, or had uncontrollable disorders like handicapped, blind, or delinquency. The New Deal was established to influence the economy and have a positive impact and it did.
Negative Impact: Franklin's internment of the 100,000 Japanese was the most negative impact because it angered the Asian nation and provoked the attack on Pearl-Harbor which ignited bad relations between the two nations and eventually leading to war. This decision made by FDR was poor because of the time the nation was in. Cautions needed to be taken, and it was predictable that by relocation of the Japanese would rally that nation.
Biggest Influence: Franklin D Roosevelt made a huge and influential decision when he decided to enter World War II. This feared many people because of the power of Germany and the fact that the Great Depression was ending. If anything went wrong with the decision, America could end up in a very poor situation. This decision would impact future presidents to take risks in order to better the nation and world.
Conclusion: FDR was a very good President and a tremendous leader for America, especially taking into consideration the position they were in. He got the nation out of the slump and put them back on top with his New Deal , his 3Rs, the acts he supported, and the decisions he made. All of those accounted for his rate on presidency, which lead to him earning an A.
